My girlfriend believes that if a holiday is worth observing at all, then it’s worth drawing out over a couple weeks. Maybe she’s right. Halloween’s still most of a month away, but of all holidays, this is the one most suited to Baltimore (okay, aside from Defenders’ Day), so let’s get properly warmed up. I’d hate it if we pulled muscle on the big night.
1. Edgar Allan Poe’s funeral will be held at the Westminster Hall in West Baltimore (529 W. Fayette Street). They have exhumed Poe’s body and will be re-interring it for the 200th anniversary of his death. This event is so Halloweeny, you might actually go to hell for participating in it. Services on October 11 at 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. $40.
2. The 10th Annual Baltimore Comic-Con claims the Convention Center in the Inner Harbor (1 W. Pratt Street) on October 10 and 11. According to the manager of the coffee place by my work, the big draw this year is the costume contest. This will be the first year they’ll have tried it out, and the grand prize is $1000, which, as prizes go, makes for a real genre-bender. Also, my man on the inside recommends shaking hands with Brian Pulido, creator of Lady Death, among other things. Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A two day pass will run you $25.
3. All right, so this is a cheap shot, but I feel obliged to take it. The Sun is running a contest to determine which are the most popular of Baltimore’s many blogs. We, apparently, are not in the running. That said, The Mobbies, as they are called, provide a good opportunity to learn more about different blogs (many of whom we already endorse!) covering our dear Mob Town. Cast a vote or just browse the lists. Categories include Neighborhood, Art + DIY, and Ravens, so it’s likely you’ll see something of interest. More universally appealing, of course, is the awards party the Sun is throwing October 14 at the Metro Gallery in Station North (1700 N. Charles Street) starting at 7:00 p.m. Voting booths close October 9 at 5:00 p.m. Blog discovery closes never.
