Feel the bite hidden deep in that gust of balmy late September air? That’s your inability for the next six months to go outside without wincing. Carpe early autumn, Baltimore, and enjoy the capricious outdoors while you can. Three ways to do so:

1. Free Fall Baltimore starts Thursday. The annual city-wide harvest cheapening ritual means loads of performances, spectacles, and delights indoors and out will be acquirable at a fraction of the usual price. Check out the website for details. A favorite of the alfresco variety is the Patterson Park Great Halloween Lantern Parade (at Linwood and Eastern Avenues) on October 24 at 7:00 p.m.

2. The Maryland branch of the Audubon Society offers monthly bird-watching walks through the aforementioned park from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. There are apparently over 50 different species of birds living in the park, and at least four pretty ones. The tour is free, and if you call ahead (410 558-2473), the good people at the society will even provide binoculars.

3. The Baltimore Book Festival is taking over Mt. Vernon (600 block of N. Charles Street) this weekend. Makeshift tents will girdle the Washington Monument just like it was the War of 1812! From noon to 8:00 p.m. on September 25, 26, and 27, the Festival will present over 200 authors, including Buzz Aldrin, Ralph Nader, and Gwen Ifill. Also books will be sold. If you don’t show up, you are illiterate––in which case you won’t be offended anyway.

How will you savor the weather before it goes south?
