Upcoming Events – Weekend of 8/21
If you’re not among the underage throng currently moping its way through the school supply section of the big box megastore this weekend, then you may actually be looking forward to the cool temperature and relative excitement of early September. In the meantime, some neat things are happening this week. Among which:
1. Hey! Restaurant Week {http://www.baltimorerestaurantweek.com/} has been extended to through this weekend, August 22 and 23. You can now enjoy the treats and bargains of the celebration we weirdly pretend is annual but which basically happens every couple months and is always, without fail, extended an additional weekend. Regardless of the stats, it’s worth taking this opportunity to eat well cheaply. My favorite so far this go around? Chameleon Café {http://thechameleoncafe.com} in Lauraville (4341 Harford Road). Make sure you eat meat and order dessert.
2. The Inner Harbor Art Festival {http://artfestival.com/events/visitorsShow/131} goes up this weekend in two locations: the Power Plant {http://cordish.com/} on Pratt Street (601 E. Pratt Street) and the Power Plant Live! {http://www.powerplantlive.com/} at Market Place and Water Street (34 Market Place). Like Artscape’s {http://www.artscape.org/splash.cfm} smaller, more civilized cousin, the IHAF consists of a juried art show, whispering fancy people, and free admission. The hours are Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A little kitsch, a little craft, a little deadly-serious airbrush.
3. This one isn’t exactly an event, but you could make it one. Gwynns Falls Trail {http://www.gwynnsfallstrail.org} offers a Twilight Canoe Escape every other Wednesday presumably until it’s just not nice enough out anymore. This Wednesday is one of those nights. Meet at the Middle Branch Park (3301 Waterview Ave.) at 6:00 p.m. and paddle a canoe tranquilly at dusk––in the city! Watch the sun set! Feel momentarily at one with nature! Just $5!
4. All right, last one. Small, free, and semi-out-of-doors, it’s the first half of the End of Summer Fiction Readings presented by El Rancho Grande {http://www.myspace.com/itsabigranch} in Hampden (3608 Falls Road) on Sunday, August 30 at 7:00 p.m. Disclosure: I live with one of the guys who’s reading, but I’d probably be telling you about this even if I didn’t. Todd Whaley, Evan Balkan, and Jeff Colosino will read original fiction. Most stories aren’t worth remembering. These will be.
What are you concluding this week? What are you getting ready for?
