Once a week, during the summers of my youth, the local movie theatre played kids movies in the mornings. Years later the only film I remember is Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang, but, fleeting memories be damned, I liked going. Not only because it was a chance for ten-year-old me to go to the movies by myself, but also because those theatres were cold. Movies and air conditioning go together like summer and blockbusters. If you’re looking for somewhere to escape the heat and catch a flick, we’ve got a few suggestions.
For first run movies near downtown, I’d recommend Landmark Theatres in Harbor East. They’ve got cushy chairs, wide screens, a new car smell (so claims my roommate, at least), and something I’d never heard in my Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang days: a full bar. We don’t know anywhere else in town to pick up a frosty Romulan Ale, do you?
By now, hopefully, you’re all acquainted with the Charles Theater. If not, let me first cast shame upon you for not taking in any independent movies or supporting local businesses. That aside, the Charles, being next to Tapas Teatro and Sofi’s Crepes and all, is probably the best dinner-and-a-movie spot in town. And, if things are going well, Club Charles is right across the street for a post-movie drink with your lovely, lovely date.
If you prefer to stay home and make your own popcorn, we understand. Renting a movie’s the best when there’s nothing out that you want to see. While Video Americain is my local video store, I also wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Four Star Video in Bolton Hill. Both arrange their movies by director (a little touch that I love) and both are chock full of art films and indie releases you won’t find at any Blockbuster. Try Old Joy on for size; it’s a great little movie that nobody’s seen.
And finally, if you like being outside and free movies, check out this list of free outdoor movie nights in Baltimore we wrote a couple weeks ago. Most continue showing films through the end of August. Enjoy!
