Upcoming Events – Weekend of 7/24
Offerings this week may not ever set your heart galloping, but you’re certain to get a good trot going at least. Starting with the small and concluding with the medium, then, here are the quirkily intriguing if finally unintoxicating happenings of the week to come:
Germano’s Trattoria {www.germanostrattoria.com} in Little Italy (300 S. High Street) will continue into the second year of its cabaret series with a night of tributes to Lawrence Welk and the Lennon Sisters, complete with bubble machine. In case you’re not familiar with Mr. Welk’s work, you may recognize the theme from recent Saturday Night Live sketches––likely to be the performances’ more immediate inspiration. The show begins Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31 at 7:30 pm. Cover is $10.
The Walters Art Museum {www.thewalters.org} in Mt. Vernon (600 N. Charles Street) has hosted an ongoing family activity for the last few weekends, and this one wraps it up. In honor of the Japanese festival of Tanabata, which is rooted in myths about the stars (and is, according to a friend, quite emotional in Japan), the Walters invites you to bring your kids to learn about the festival and to make giant streaming stories on Saturday, July 25 and wishing stars on Sunday, July 26. The Japanese star-based activities will be going strong from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Finally, Hamilton (5500 Harford Rd.) welcomes you to the 16th Annual Hamilton Street Festival and Classic Car Show {www.hamiltonlauravillemainstreet.org/PDF/HamStreetFestival070709.pdf}. The revelry begins at 11:00 a.m. and burns out around 8:00 p.m. Harford road will be filled with local vendors, pedestrians, two music stages, and, as promised, plenty of classic cars to admire. If you stand equidistant to Hamilton Street and Gibbons Avenue, you can even listen to the bands on both music stages at the same time, preferably while eating a corn dog and purchasing a pair of handmade fuzzy dice.
Where will you go to raise an eyebrow this weekend?
