We here at UDL have a soft spot deep in the recesses of our hearts for nerds. We can’t help it, we met far too many of our friends in science class, spent way too much time reading comic books, and, sadly, didn’t talk to nearly enough girls. Don’t get us wrong, we know there’s some truly loveable guys out there playing D&D and talking about just how terrible the Clone saga really was. (TERRIBLE!) We’d like to suggest, however, that all things geeky aren’t just for geeks. In that spirit we present you with our latest obsession: games!
Let’s clarify for a second here: we’re talking about games a bit more obscure than Capture the Flag or Monopoly. Board games like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Puerto Rico, and Agricola. We’re talking about card games, both the collectible kind (Call of Cthulhu; and Magic the Gathering), and the just plain ridiculous (Fluxx; Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magical Carrot). Seriously. They’re all a blast.
The best place in town to find all of this wondrous, wondrous fantasy foolishness is at Caton Games (2101 Essex Street). This is a serious game store. They can help you find a RPG (role playing game) group if you don’t have one…and, in our experience, they’re pretty helpful if you don’t know what it is that you’re looking for. We’re not the only ones who like these guys either; City Paper named them the best game store in the city.
If you’re more of a video game player though, we should send you over to Game Stop. Yeah, we know they’re a chain and we’re big proponents of local businesses. But really, if you’re in the city and you need to get that new edition of World of Warcraft or a new Wii controller (you were just trying to bowl!), they’re the best place to go. The South Charles Village store (2436 N Charles Street) is convenient to downtown and most of the city.
What’s your favorite game that we haven’t heard of? Any D&D fans out there?

I just played Settlers of Catan last week, and really enjoyed it. It made me want to start having board game nights at the house.
Have you heard of Candamir, which is apparently a Catan-based game w/ RPG aspects? (I sound like such a nerd, I know.) Sounds intriguing but I kinda want to play before I buy….
