Events this week range from the soberly pragmatic to the frothy.

Humane Metropolis Baltimore will take place at the Maryland Historical Society in Mt. Vernon (201 W. Monument Street) on Thursday, June 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The conference is being offered by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and will involve workshops, panels, and lectures on topics ranging from urban streams to food supply crises (with much packed in between). Admission is free.

More than thirty gardens and homes will be open to visitors for the 15th Annual Reservoir Hill Garden and Home Tour on Saturday, June 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday, June 7, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Many of the homes in this neighborhood were constructed in the late nineteenth century, and the gardens here are for garden people what the Woodberry Kitchen (2010 Clipper Park Road., No. 126) is for food people. Tickets can be picked up handshake-style at the corner of Park Avenue and Reservoir Street for $10, which covers entry, snacks, live music, and appreciative squeals.

The National Aquarium (501 E. Pratt Street) and the Maryland Science Center (601 Light Street), both in the Inner Harbor, have coordinated exhibits of alarmingly educational monsters. A multi-genre display of Chinasaurs (Seriously, as in dinosaurs from China) is now up and animatronically running at the Maryland Science Center. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children. And starting Saturday, June 6, the National Aquarium has a rival show on jellies, those bloodless, translucent, tentacular piles of slime that sting you at the beach. Tickets are $24.95 for adults and $14.95 for children.

What didactic happenings are on your calendar this week?
