Upcoming Events – Weekend of 5/29

May 29th, 2009 by Brent Roberts

RandRGIACflyerEverything good this week is happening in the wrong place. Or maybe I mean the unlikely place. Which is okay, because I can tell you what and where. Just saying.

This weekend the Annex Theatre, which is a glorified and glorious warehouse space in Station North (419 E. Oliver Street), presents ‘Reality & Revenge: Green is a Color,’ a festival of ten-minute plays by various artists. In all candor, I’ve previously done work at the Annex, and another one of our contributors will be performing in R. & R. If anything, this is all the more reason to attend. There’s one show on Saturday, May 30 at 8:00 p.m. and another on Sunday, May 31 at noon. Tickets are $5, meaning cheaper than going to a movie and twice as sweaty.

Monday at Centerstage in Midtown (700 N. Calvert Street), come hear the latest installment of the Stoop Storytelling Series while sitting comfortably in a chair, under a roof. The show starts on Monday, June 1 at 8:00 p.m., but be there an hour early to have a cocktail and let Caleb Stine and the Brakemen put you in the mood with a little live music. The theme of this collection of Stoop stories is “Good Sport: Stories about winning, losing, and everything in between.” Tickets are $15; get them ahead of time.

Hey, you know how we’re always talking about simple ways to restructure our everyday urban existence in order to make it more efficient and sustainable? Well, the First Unitarian Church {www.firstunitarian.net} in Mt. Vernon (1 W. Hamilton Street) is hosting a talk by Tiffany James of the Parking Authority of Baltimore on Mayor Sheila Dixon’s plan to organize a fleet of short-term rental cars for general use in the city, with the goal of eliminating superfluous car use. It’s like a city-organized carpool. But with choices. And you drive yourself. Skeptical? Let Ms. James field your questions this Tuesday, June 2 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Historic headache medicine landmark the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower Downtown (21 S. Eutaw Street) invites visitors this Thursday, June 4 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm for studio tours, refreshments, and art shopping. The tower currently accommodates thirty artists among fourteen floors, and yes, you can see your house from here.

  • On the sporting front, tonight is the major league debut of Orioles uber-prospect Matt Wieters, the consensus “future of the franchise” in Baltimore. It sounds like tickets are still available but it may be a sellout by tonight. I’d head down there to experience the playoff atmosphere that the city has been missing for years.
