Baltimore has its fair share of charming rowhouses and cosmopolitan condos… and, let’s face it, they’re eye-catching. So it makes sense that when we take a look at real estate options around town, we tend to think compact/urban/close to downtown. But one of the nice things about Baltimore is that you can also live in a house, you know, with a YARD and everything, but not be stuck out in a suburban wasteland. (Well, you can also live in a house and be stuck out in a suburban wasteland, but we’re not so interested in that, for some reason.) So here are a few houses currently for sale, all in the $300,000 neighborhood.
Better Waverly
We’ll start out with a digression: it’s always seemed a little, well, rude, this Waverly/Better Waverly distinction. (It also always makes us wonder: where is Best Waverly? We want to live there!) But with our commenters having eagle eyes for neighborhood borderlines, we’ll officially call this one like we see it — below 33rd Street, therefore Better. Oh, and the house in question? It’s a three-story farmhouse with five bedrooms and three baths, and it’s been recently renovated — new floors, drywall, siding, windows — so it should be in good shape without you having to do much more work. You could easily walk/bike to Hopkins’ Homewood Campus or Union Memorial from this guy. Other things we like: the big kitchen (with kitchen island!), the front porch and second-floor deck in the back; things we like less: the low ceilings and somewhat blah bathrooms. But, hey, there’s always room to make things better. (Get it!?) Listed at $299,999 — down from $319,000.

Lauraville
Four stories! Five bedrooms! Four bathrooms! That’s a lot of space to fill, which means you should probably start having lots of babies right now. This recently-updated Lauraville colonial has all-new bathrooms and a fancy gourmet kitchen so you can cook huge meals for your huge family. Or maybe you want to use the extra rooms as a study, or to store your Pez dispenser collection? Really, it’s up to you. Other nice things include a master bedroom with a walk-in closet; a two-car garage; a second-floor deck off the master bedroom; and a first-floor deck off the kitchen. However, we’re not crazy about the floors — carpeted in the bedrooms, and laminate in other areas. But maybe you’re not as obsessed with hardwood floors as we are. Listed at $320,000 — down from $340,000.
Forest Park
3009 Garrison Boulevard, 21216
When we got lost in West Baltimore the other day (don’t ask), the only thing that kept us from tearing our hair out was admiring the lovely Victorians along Garrison Boulevard. Some are relatively run-down (and the neighborhood isn’t the greatest),but this two-story, six-bedroom, three-bath house looks like it’s in good shape. It got a new roof just a couple of years ago, as well as new carpets, new appliances, and a new railing for that pretty front porch. We’d probably re-paint the dramatic black borders around the doorframes to make the place look more light and open. Listed at $270,000.
