Most (all?) of the events and specials you’ll learn about here at UDL are open to Baltimoreans of all genders and inclinations, and while none of the venues named below will bar you from the door for having or being one thing or another, it seems appropriate to give a nod to our friends who have recently been finding themselves able to get married in more and more states all over the country. Congratulations, homosexuals. As my New Orleanian roommate would say: Yeah, you right. Below is a by-no-means-comprehensive list of weekly deals at B-more’s gay-leaning establishments. Enjoy:
- Friday night means a dance party at obvious massive party complex Grand Central in Mt. Vernon (1001 N. Charles Street). Drinks are $2.50 before 11:00 p.m. Shake it (your tail, not your drink). Also, upstairs at Grand Central’s startlingly posh sister joint, Sappho’s Exclusive Ladies Lounge, there’s no cover for ladies on Friday and Saturday.
- For a more laid-back, casual atmosphere, head to Coconut’s Café in Mt. Vernon (311 W. Madison Street) on Tuesday for an endearingly cheesy Hawaiian theme and totally respectable 25-cent wings.
- Come to the Hippo in Mt. Vernon (1 W. Eager Street) to hang out at the only nightclub in Baltimore that was neither converted from some other use nor converted into some other use, but rather was originally built as a nightclub. That nightclub used to be called the Chanticleer and, though we’re not comparing names here, jeez. Monday the rail drinks are $2; the timelessness is free.
- Port in a Storm in Highlandtown (4330 E. Lombard Street) has scooped up the legacy of Gallagher’s and offers free pool every Tuesday if you get tired of grooving.
- And if you’re really in the mood for a cold beer and a good story, drop by Leon’s in Mt. Vernon (870 Park Avenue). Over fifty years old, it’s Baltimore’s oldest gay bar, and every day of the week drinks are two for one between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. Make a visit and find out that you’ve still got a lot to learn.
What’s your favorite place to be gay and thrifty in Baltimore?
