What Can You Get for Under 200k?

May 11th, 2009 by Brent Roberts

We’ve said this before, but we’ll just put this out there on the table anyway—we think you should live in Baltimore, the city not the county. Get in on it, the greatest city in America and all that. But one of the wonderful things about our city is that its got so many different facets. So let’s just say you’re looking to buy a place to live for around $200,000…. well, here are a few very different (but equally great) ways you could go about it.

The City Condo

1 E. Chase Street #612, 21202

The beaux-arts Belvedere in the heart of Mt. Vernon is one of the most famous buildings in town, known mostly for all the stars of the past who liked to drink at its famous Owl Bar. (So if your apartment turns out to be haunted by a blotto Zelda Fitzgerald, don’t say we didn’t warn you.) This freshly updated two-bedroom, two-bath apartment boasts big rooms and high ceilings. To sweeten the deal, the seller is throwing in a $2000 appliance allowance and a year of condo fees. Listed at $199,900.

The Porch-Front Rowhouse

3902 Greenmount Avenue, 21218

Straddling the divide between Guilford and Waverly, this endearing two-story, three-bedroom, one-bath rowhouse is just plain cute. We like how it shows a nice mix of city sophistication (hardwood floors throughout) and quaint details (a wood-burning stove, an appealing backyard). Apparently this little guy was the mews of prominent Guilford architect J. Winthrop Wolcott, back in 1935 when it was built. The property also features a garage, an attic and an unfinished basement and is listed at $185,000. I have to admit, I have a big crush on this little guy.

Lots of greenery makes this rowhouse feel decidedly un-citified.

The House With a Yard

5105 Holder Avenue, 21214

This four-bedroom, two-bath Waltherson (near Lauraville) home is ideal for those of us who crave space—you know, big backyard space; separate living room space; giant kitchen space; two-car garage space—but still want to stick close to the city. We like its hardwood floors, back deck, and big leafy trees. This one seems worth the extra work that it needs to make it in tip-top shape. Listed at $190,000.

Large pine trees provide year-round shade.

Wed spend entire evenings on that porch swing with a big pitcher of lemonade.
