Now that Aprille has thoroughly perced the droghte of Marche, it’s almost time for depraved May. Let’s go outside, get a sunburn, and enjoy Baltimore’s endearing and enduring kink. Saturday is going to be a very big day.

The American Visionary Arts Museum in the Inner Harbor (800 Key Highway) will be hosting the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race all day long on Saturday, May 2. The race is about eight hours long and covers fifteen miles, including a portion in mud and water. All racing devices are human-power sculptures built specifically for the event, though coming in first is not the primary goal. Kitsch, absurdity, and above all spectacle rule the day, so put on some stripedy tights and a clown wig and show up early for a day of West Coast-inspired ridiculousness.

Then/Or head over to the Second Annual Boundary Block Party at Eutaw and McMechen Streets. Get a taste of four neighborhoods (Upton, Sandtown, Madison Park, and Bolton Hill), and take in the live music, free food, history tours, and collaborative art. Rollicking will occur between 1:00 – 4 p.m.

And: it’s the first Saturday of the month again, which means you can park for free when you stop by the Station North Flea Market on the 100 Block of W. North Avenue between Maryland Avenue and Howard Street from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Drums, shoes, masks, chess, and girls with arm tattoos all will be found there.

By next week I expect you to have a farmer’s tan. Until then, where’s your favorite place to freeload?
