Upcoming Events — Weekend of 4/10

April 10th, 2009 by Brent Roberts

It’s already starting to feel like a Brother-Can-You-Spare-a-Dime kind of year, and tax time certainly doesn’t make that feeling go away. There’s always drowning your sorrows or drinking yourself to oblivion, but why not just revel in it? We suggest doing so at An Die Musik’s (409 N. Charles Street) Tribute to the Tax Man concert on Friday, April 10 at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. For $20 ($15 for you lucky students and seniors), you get a program of monetary music sung by singer-songwriter Sandy Asirvatham. The night will end with an audience sing-along to “Pennies From Heaven.” We’re not even kidding.

Taking even more of the pain out of that whole death/taxes thing this week is Mt. Vernon Italian powerhouse Sotto Sopra (405 N. Charles Street). Get your reservations in ASAP, because the restaurant is giving back by offering $1 pastas on tax day, Wednesday, April 15 if you make a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and/or Our Daily Bread. On the menu: Penne with Salmon and Pernod, Rigatoni with Eggplant and Mozzarella, and old favorites like Spaghetti alla Bolognese. A limited menu of salads/desserts will also be offered.

All weekend long, the Johns Hopkins Film Festival will be airing films long and short, new and old. Our picks: Hitchcock’s romantic Nazi spy flick Notorious on Friday at 8 p.m., and Brick, which is something of a high school noir via Shakespeare, on Saturday at 7 p.m. Most films are held in Shriver Hall on the Homewood Campus in Charles Village (3400 N. Charles Street), home of the largest screen in Maryland, apparently (!?). Individual films are $5, a day pass is $10, and a festival pass is $20. Or $0, if you’re a JHU affiliate.

And, finally, if you’ve enjoyed any art or dance or music or performance in Baltimore recently, you should probably pay attention to this one. Earlier this week we mentioned the controversy surrounding the City Council’s proposed new live entertainment bill. (For a quick rundown, check out this article from this week’s City Paper.) It’s a cause worthy of activism, we believe; if you want to get involved, the Baltimore City Community College (2901 Liberty Heights Avenue) hosts a community work session in its auditorium on Thursday, April 16 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Go let your voice be heard!
