Baltimore Markets – Northeast and Broadway

March 26th, 2009 by Brent Roberts

broadway-market1So we managed to cover two of Baltimore’s markets last week (In case you missed it, here they are.) But that leaves four outstanding.  And since we consider ourselves nothing if not comprehensive, we decided to cover two more this week.  Without further ado, we bring you the Broadway and Northeast Markets.

Northeast Market is located at 2101 E. Monument Street, quite close to the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus.  We like to imagine our med school friends – well the one, anyway – ducking out of the hospital after rounds, making a beeline for Dawn’s Sticky Bun Bakery across the way.  (Doctor or no, she could probably happily survive on sticky buns and Teddy Grahams.)  If you’ve just come from the patient end of JHMI, though, you might want to try Richardson’s Produce.  We’ve heard only great things – such as a rumor, sadly unconfirmed, that they’re one of the largest purveyors of greens on the East Coast.

Broadway Market, located in the heart of Fells Point (1640 Aliceanna Street), has always fascinated us.  It was our first market experience in Baltimore and, to be honest, we were a little bewildered.  We got some vegetable lo mein (too long ago to remember where) and walked down to the waterfront.  One of the smaller markets (there are only nine vendors), Broadway split in two by Alicanna Street.  If you’re looking for a good pierogi in Fells you could do a lot worse than Sophia’s Place.  They’ve got nine (nine!) varieties, and while we can’t claim to have sampled them all, the one’s we have had were pretty darn good.  But don’t just take our word for it, the City Paper agrees.
