Events Listing – Weekend of 3/20

March 20th, 2009 by Brent Roberts

Baltimore’s first on-street bicycle “parking lot” opens up this weekend in Charles Village. Follow the bike parade from City Hall on Friday, March 20 at 5 p.m. all the way up to Eddie’s Market in Charles Village (3117 St. Paul Street) for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration; the (uphill!) bike procession will be headed by none other than Mayor Sheila Dixon (who manages to make a helmet look quite fetching, in our humble opinion).

With this tentative warm weather, we’re making the transition from soups to salads. That’s why we’re planning on heading over to Parks and People’s Saturday morning workshop on table grown lettuce. You’ll learn by making salad tables and trays for Baltimore City senior centers, and if you’re lucky you’ll get the chance to make one for yourself. All materials are provided for $4 (free for members); head on over to the Cardinal Shehan School (5407 Loch Raven Boulevard) at 10 a.m. to get started on those greens.

Spring is a time of abundance and growth, which is why we think you should make a beeline for RA Sushi in Fells Point (1390 Lancaster Street) for their sushi-eating contest on Sunday, March 22 at noon. There’s a complicated NCAA-like bracket system involved, but here’s the most important thing you need to know:  the winner gets free sushi for a year. And to make things appealing for non-competitors, there are food and drink specials, too.

Once you’re primed for competition, head on over to the Harley-Davidson Store out in the county (8845 Pulaski Highway) from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for the Amazing Race casting call. Yes, that’s right – the fame- and fortune-filled life of a reality TV star may be yours in the near future!

If you haven’t been to the Evergreen House Museum in North Baltimore (4545 N. Charles Street), well then a tour of the museum and its grounds is event enough. This week, though, you can have the added pleasure of a lecture on “the wisdom, versatility, and occasional wickedness of the Monument City’s most recognized interior decorator,” Billy Baldwin. The talk is a part of the House Beautiful Lecture Series and includes a lightly catered reception. Tickets for the whole series are $48 ($33 for members and students); individual events are $20 ($15 for members and students).
