How Far Can $300,000 Get You in Baltimore?

March 2nd, 2009 by Brent Roberts

Home prices are dropping across town, and some are arguing that now is the best time to buy. But what and where? Baltimore has an overabundance of appealing neighborhoods, each with its own pros and cons. So we set out on a quest to find out just what you can get for your money in various parts of the city. (And this is just the beginning—look for more posts like this in the near future.) You’d be surprised at what $300,000 will get you.
Mount Vernon

We love Mount Vernon for its mix of the old and new — trendy restaurants in buildings your great-grandfather might have appreciated, for example. This National Landmark Historic District has played host to a slew of famous residents: Wallis Simpson (the former Duchess of Windsor), F. Scott Fitzgerald, Emily Post and Gertrude Stein, to name a few.

This first-floor condominium is class personified, starting with its awe-inspiring marble lobby. There’s plenty of space here: two bedrooms and two baths, three (!) fireplaces, plus lots of beautiful hardwood floors and 9′ ceilings. The marble-floored kitchen boasts a huge chef-quality oven/range. It was listed at $300,000 and just recently went under contract. Drool.

Federal Hill

There’s just something about Federal Hill — maybe it’s feeling of a link to the past, or the generational continuity of families who have lived here through several generations. Or perhaps it’s the beautiful brick rowhomes so close to the Harbor.

213 Fort Avenue East, 21230

This warm two-bedroom 2.5-bath row house was listed for $284,900 before it went off the market in mid February.   Details were the key here: we particularly liked the breakfast bar in the comfy kitchen. With its beautiful wood floors, granite counter tops, and lovely deck, we’ll have to call this one a steal.
131 Ostend Street, 21230

We decided to let this two-bedroom, 2.5-bath colonial-style house in, even though it’s listed at $310,000. This one screams family home to us—it’s wonderfully cozy, with a cheerful interior, great layout, and complete kitchen with granite countertops, first-floor laundry room, fireplace… you get the picture.

Have we piqued your interest?  These houses might not all be on the market still, but for $300,000 you can definately find something similar.   If you want to see what else is out there, check out our Baltimore real estate site at www.urbandiscoveriesliving.com or send us an email.
