Frugal Tuesday: Less Money, Fewer Problems

UPDATE: Missed out on last night’s free movie? We found a Wednesday-only freebie just for you: Adventures in Baltimore Restaurants alerts us that Panera Bread is giving out free coffee & breakfast sandwich samples on Jan. 28 until 9 p.m. They’re urging customers to contribute to the Children’s Home Foundation, and matching donations up to $250, so you can get some good karma along with that free coffee.

Lean times don’t have to mean tedium, despite Granddad’s Great Depression stories. This week, The Greatest City in America is doing her part to keep us rich in spirit, even if we’re poor.

Run, don’t walk, uphill both ways to the Maryland Science Center in the Inner Harbor, which is just as cool as you remember from your grade school days, especially if you’ve now got kids of your own. Every Friday through March 27th, the MSC offers admission for only $8.00 after 5 p.m. That gets you into the exhibit halls (of which there are upwards of seven), the planetarium, and the IMAX Theatre. Three movies are currently in rotation there, two cold — Kilimanjaro, Antarctica — and one cartoon — Fly Me to the Moon.

And while you’re in the Inner Harbor, stop by the National Aquarium. They’re running the same deal on Fridays after five. Make your eight bucks count and test the Aquarium’s claims to defy theoretical physics with their 4D Immersion theatre. Or just bask in the squishy glow of their collection — currently including some 16,000-odd animals. Just stay on the right side of the glass.

Before you get down there, though, get up and go tonight to the Charles Theatre in Station North. On Tuesday, January 27, City Paper is giving Baltimore a little Merry Recession present: Free Movie Night. Doors open at 5 p.m., movies at 6:30. The first 800 people to show up get in. There are five movies showing, and each theatre is first-come-first-served. No savesies. Concessions are not free, but they will sell you a beer. Buy a couple and toast City Paper for their generosity.

Watch this space in weeks to come for more deals, discounts, and scams. In the meantime, how are you making the most of a meager season?
