Inauguration Week Events in Baltimore

January 15th, 2009 by Brent Roberts

obamaThe Inauguration Day MARC trains to DC are all sold out, but never fear — there’s plenty of Obama-mania going on right here in Baltimore. Here are our picks for Inauguration events close to home.

Update: The details for Barack Obama’s Baltimore visit have finally been confirmed. The president-elect will make a Downtown appearance Saturday at War Memorial Plaza (101 N. Gay Street) at 4:15 p.m and stay for about an hour. Though the venue can only accommodate about 30,000 people, police commissioner Frederick Bealefeld said that 100,000 people might show up. If you plan on being one of them, make sure you bundle up — forecasters are predicting a high temperature of 24 degrees on Saturday.

The President-elect makes a brief Baltimore visit on his whistle stop tour to Washington. Planners are tight-lipped about the details so far, but stay tuned — we’ll keep you posted. As of now, he’s scheduled to arrive in town by 4 p.m. on Saturday and stay about an hour. The city will provide buses from M&T Bank Stadium to the as-yet-undisclosed location starting at 11 a.m.

But what about the parties, you ask? Well, you can kick things off on Saturday at the Creative Alliance in Canton (3134 Eastern Avenue). Their $5 pre-inauguration dance party promises to get you moving to music from our future president’s iPod. And if you’re planning to dance all night, you can keep your energy level up with a bowl of Obama’s favorite chili.

On Inauguration Day, The Enoch Pratt Free Library’s Central Branch in Mt. Vernon (400 Cathedral Street) broadcasts the ceremony for free on a 100 square foot screen — make sure to get there early to claim a seat.

The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture in the Inner Harbor (830 E. Pratt Street) also hosts a screening (included with $8 admission, or free if you’re a student). A stroll around the museum’s exhibits will put this historical day in context.

Continue your downtown celebration with Celebrate Obama Baltimore’s blowout at the Havana Club (600 Water Street). The $95 ticket includes dinner, dancing, and an open bar from 7 – 9 p.m. Itching to dress up? They encourage black-tie attire, but it’s not required.

What are your election day plans?
